Tampa Bay Rays Playoffs Are Here: What to Know Before This Weekend’s ALDS

October baseball has officially arrived in Tampa Bay — and the Rays are bringing playoff baseball back to St. Petersburg.
SWC  |  October 1, 2026

After an incredible 2026 regular season, the Tampa Bay Rays are heading into the American League Division Series (ALDS) as the No. 1 seed in the American League. And if you’re looking for something fun to do in St. Pete this weekend, it’s hard to beat the energy of playoff baseball.

The Rays will take the field at Tropicana Field on Saturday, October 3 at 6:30 p.m. ET, opening their best-of-five ALDS against the New York Yankees.

Whether you’ve been following the Rays all season or you’re the type of fan who suddenly becomes very interested in baseball once October rolls around, here’s everything you need to know before the first pitch.

The Tampa Bay Rays Are Back in the Playoffs

It has been quite a season for Tampa Bay.

The Rays clinched a spot in the 2026 postseason on September 11 — the earliest they have ever secured a playoff berth. Just 11 days later, they clinched the American League East with a 6-1 win over the Yankees in New York.

The Rays finished the regular season with the best record in the American League, earning the No. 1 seed and a first-round bye.

That means while the other American League playoff teams battled through the Wild Card round, Tampa Bay had several days to rest, recover and prepare for October baseball.

And now, the wait is over.

Why This Weekend Is a Big Deal for St. Petersburg

There is something different about October baseball.

The regular season is 162 games long. The postseason is different. Every pitch matters, every at-bat feels bigger and the entire atmosphere around the city changes when the home team is playing meaningful baseball.

And this year, Rays fans have even more reason to be excited.

Tampa Bay finished the regular season 55-26 at Tropicana Field, giving the Rays home-field advantage throughout the ALDS and AL Championship Series.

For St. Petersburg, that means playoff baseball right in our backyard.

If you're heading downtown this weekend, grabbing dinner with friends, meeting up for drinks or simply looking for a reason to get out and enjoy the city, you’re likely to see plenty of Rays blue throughout St. Pete.

What Makes This Rays Team So Fun to Watch?

One of the biggest storylines heading into the postseason is Junior Caminero, who finished the regular season with 40 home runs and 100 RBIs.

The Rays also enter October after spending much of the season at the top of the American League standings.

According to MLB, Tampa Bay went 22-4 from April 22 through May 22 and took sole possession of first place in the AL East on June 28 — a position they never surrendered.

Now they’ll have to turn that regular-season success into postseason success.

And standing in their way?

A very familiar opponent.

Rays vs. Yankees: An AL East Showdown

If you’ve lived in the Tampa Bay area for any amount of time, you know there’s a little extra energy whenever the Rays and Yankees meet.

This series adds even more stakes.

The Yankees entered the postseason as the No. 4 seed and faced the Boston Red Sox in the Wild Card Series. After sweeping Boston, New York advanced to face the top-seeded Rays.

It’s an AL East rivalry with a trip to the American League Championship Series on the line.

And it all starts Saturday night in St. Pete.

The ALDS is a best-of-five series.

The winner will advance to the American League Championship Series, which is scheduled to begin October 12. From there, the ultimate goal is the World Series, which begins October 23.

For the Rays, this postseason represents another opportunity to chase something the franchise has never accomplished: a World Series championship.

Tampa Bay has made nine postseason appearances in 19 seasons since its first playoff run in 2008. The Rays previously reached the World Series in 2008 and 2020.

Could 2026 be the year?
