Pelican Rugby: Brotherhood, Grit, and Community in St. Petersburg

Tucked into the vibrant sports culture of St. Petersburg is a team that embodies something deeper than competition—Pelican Rugby. For nearly five decades, the Bay Area Pelican Rugby Football Club has been building a legacy rooted in toughness, camaraderie, and community.

A Legacy Since 1977

Founded in 1977, Pelican Rugby is one of the oldest rugby clubs in the Tampa Bay area.

What began as a group of passionate players has evolved into a cornerstone of local rugby culture. Today, the club fields multiple competitive men’s teams competing in Florida Rugby Union leagues, continuing to represent St. Pete with pride on pitches across the state.

But Pelican Rugby is more than wins and standings—it’s about tradition. From the moment players step onto the field, they’re part of something bigger: a brotherhood built on respect, discipline, and relentless effort.

Where the Pelicans Play

If you’ve ever driven past Puryear Park, you might not realize you’re passing one of the city’s most passionate sporting communities.

This is home turf for the Pelicans—where practices and matches bring together players, supporters, and families several nights a week. Training typically takes place on weekday evenings, creating a consistent rhythm of energy and activity in the park.

On game days, the pitch transforms. Cleats dig into the grass, collisions echo, and teammates rally around each other in a sport that demands both physical grit and mental resilience.

More Than a Team: A Community

One of the most unique aspects of Pelican Rugby is its culture. Rugby, unlike many American sports, places a strong emphasis on sportsmanship and mutual respect—values that the Pelicans carry both on and off the field.

The club includes not only active players but also a strong network of “Old Boys” (alumni players) and social members who continue to support the team long after their playing days are over.

This sense of belonging is what keeps people coming back. It’s not just about playing—it’s about finding your people.

Growing the Game: Youth Rugby in St. Pete

Pelican Rugby isn’t just focused on today—it’s building the future of the sport locally.

Through its youth program, the club welcomes boys and girls ages 7–18, introducing them to rugby in a supportive and inclusive environment.

The mission goes beyond athletics. Young players learn teamwork, leadership, and resilience—life skills that extend far beyond the pitch. Safety, respect, and community are at the heart of the program, making it accessible to kids of all experience levels.

In a city known for sunshine and waterfront views, Pelican Rugby is quietly shaping the next generation of athletes and leaders.

Why Pelican Rugby Matters

In a region dominated by mainstream sports, Pelican Rugby stands out as something different—raw, authentic, and deeply rooted in tradition.

It’s a place where newcomers are welcomed, hard work is expected, and friendships are forged through shared challenges. Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or someone looking to try something new, the Pelicans offer an opportunity to be part of a tight-knit, passionate community.

How to Get Involved

Pelican Rugby is always looking for new players, supporters, and sponsors. No experience? No problem. The club embraces athletes of all backgrounds and skill levels.

Whether you want to play, watch, or simply connect with a unique part of St. Pete’s sports scene, Pelican Rugby is worth checking out.

In a city full of energy and growth, Pelican Rugby remains a constant—proof that some of the strongest communities are built not just on talent, but on heart.
